When Apple launched the new iPhone models, the baseline users found themselves celebrating a list of enhancements previously restricted to Pro versions. The introduction of features such as a more vivid display with ProMotion technology, an ever-active screen, and a revamped selfie camera made the decision between the iPhone 17 and Pro models seem trivial. Yet, something about the rear camera configuration of the iPhone 17 left me unsatisfied.

Switching between using the two models over several months, I set out to comprehensively compare their capabilities. Despite both models showcasing impressive functionality, the iPhone 17 Pro became my preferred choice primarily due to its camera prowess, a crucial element for photography enthusiasts like myself.

Furthermore, the Pro's optical zoom ability has seen a boost from 5x in its predecessor to 8x, facilitating clearer images from long distances without the quality degradation common with digital zoom.

In stark contrast, the standard iPhone 17 is equipped with a dual-lens camera, missing a telephoto lens entirely. This design limits it to a 2x optical and 10x digital zoom capability, whereas the Pro can extend up to an 8x optical and 40x digital zoom.

Implications of Telephoto in Photography

I captured identical subjects using zoom from both models, and the iPhone 17 Pro outperformed by maintaining detail and clarity. While the absence of a telephoto lens might not affect casual photography where one can move closer to the subject, it is invaluable for capturing landscapes or architectural shots.

Concluding Thoughts

Though the iPhone 17 can capture stunning photos, the frequency and type of photography will dictate the necessity of that extra zoom flexibility. An additional $300 investment for the Pro is justifiable for those who prioritize photography.

Apart from camera distinctions, the two phones are nearly identical. If photography isn’t the centerpiece of your decision, upgrading may be unnecessary. Nonetheless, Apple could consider integrating a telephoto lens in future base models without significantly impeding Pro sales, as many enthusiasts would still opt for the superior overall experience.
