Conflicting Reports on ICE Incident Involving Venezuelan Migrant in Minneapolis
Different narratives have surfaced regarding a tense episode in north Minneapolis where a Venezuelan migrant sustained a leg injury from a gunshot delivered by an officer from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement while purportedly attempting to escape apprehension. The incident led to the arrest of the migrant along with two other individuals.
A video captured on a mobile phone and shared on social media platforms by Democratic Sen. Erin Maye Quade purportedly documents the scene immediately following the shooting. In the audio, a woman is heard contacting emergency services and urgently seeking assistance.
According to the distressed 911 caller, her husband was pursued by ICE officers until he reached the vicinity of his home, where he was subsequently shot in the presence of his family members.
Conversely, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) presents a different account. They identified the injured man as Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis, claiming he attempted to evade federal authorities, collided with a stationary vehicle, and subsequently resisted detention.
DHS further reports that during this confrontation, two additional men emerged from a nearby building and allegedly assaulted an officer with a snow shovel and a broomstick. The ICE officer, reportedly fearing for his safety, discharged his weapon, which resulted in Sosa-Celis being shot in the leg.
Both Sosa-Celis and the officer involved were hospitalized as of Thursday following injuries sustained during the altercation.
Heightened Tensions Following Minneapolis Shooting
This latest incident comes amidst increased federal law enforcement presence, with close to 3,000 ICE and Customs and Border Protection officers mobilized across the Twin Cities in recent weeks.
In a separate protest taking place on Thursday, federal forces reportedly deployed crowd-control agents on demonstrators without prior warning.
Captured footage also shows individuals engaging in vandalism, specifically breaking into a government vehicle, removing a container, and then defacing it.
The FBI has disseminated a notice offering a reward for tips that lead to the recovery of the stolen items from the damaged federal car.
In response to the escalating demonstrations and unrest, President Trump has threatened to implement the Insurrection Act if local leaders fail to control the situation.
He stated, "Should the authority figures in Minnesota continue to disregard rule of law and fail to counter these orchestrated disruption attempts against our ICE officers, I will proceed with the Insurrection Act to swiftly restore order."
In opposition, Democratic Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota implored President Trump to de-escalate the rhetoric.
Governor Walz urged for peace among demonstrators, stressing, "We must not inflame the current chaos – doing so only perpetuates his objectives."
