Public Outcry Over ICE Agent Shooting of Renee Good
Recent surveys reveal that the majority of Americans disagree with how the Trump administration has defended an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent involved in a contentious shooting.
One poll shows over half of registered voters, 53%, believe the shooting of Renee Good was unwarranted, while 35% thought it justified. Meanwhile, 12% did not express any opinion. An overwhelming majority of Democrats and about 60% of independents consider the shooting unjustifiable, in stark contrast to over 75% of Republicans who disagree.
Perceptions of Force and Safety
Another survey reflects that 56% of participants view the use of force as improper, with only 26% agreeing with the action taken. While 18% were undecided due to insufficient information, about 51% believe the incident underscores broader issues within ICE's operational practices.
In addition, findings show that 51% of people feel ICE's activities are reducing urban safety, with 31% claiming they contribute to city safety. Another 18% feel these actions neither enhance nor diminish safety.
Varying Opinions Across Political Lines
The difference in opinion is notable across political affiliations. A significant portion, 82%, of Democrats and independents leaning left believe ICE is compromising city safety. Conversely, 67% of Republicans and those leaning right feel the agency's actions are beneficial for city safety.
Concerns about government overreach are prevalent, with 47% of the public showing more alarm over stringent measures against deportation protesters compared to 37% worried about potential protest escalations.
Skepticism Towards Government Investigation
Trust in the federal government's ability to impartially investigate the Minneapolis shooting is low, with 62% expressing little to no confidence. Almost half, 47%, have absolutely no trust, while a mere 17% trust the government significantly to handle the investigation fairly.
The footage of Good's fatal encounter with the ICE officer has been viewed by 82% of American voters, further influencing public perceptions and opinions.
OPINIONS ON IMMIGRATION POLICIES
The poll indicates that 57% of voters disapprove of the current enforcement of immigration laws by ICE, with 40% in approval, reflecting consistent sentiments from earlier surveys. A major portion of Democrats and independents voice disapproval, while the majority of Republicans support ICE.
A slight majority, 52%, feel President Trump’s initiatives to deport undocumented immigrants have been excessive, compared to 31% who find them adequate and 16% who believe they are insufficient.
Findings from a CNN survey also highlight that 61% of Americans disapprove of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem's performance, contrasting with 38% who approve. The figures differed slightly when reviewed by Quinnipiac, highlighting varied public opinion.
Polling was conducted by Quinnipiac from January 8-12 with 1,133 registered voters, featuring a margin of error of ±3.7 percentage points. Another survey during January 9-12 covered 1,209 U.S. adults, having a margin of error of ±3.1 percentage points.

The discussion around ICE practices and immigration policies continues to be a contentious topic in the United States. Public opinion remains deeply divided along political lines, highlighting the complexities of immigration enforcement as a national issue.
