Natural Cycles Unveils New Wristband for Birth Control App
Natural Cycles, known for its debated birth control application cleared by the FDA, has introduced a wristband that captures data on skin temperature, heart rate, and nighttime movement.
Widely discussed and often critiqued, the Natural Cycles app now integrates with the newly launched wristband, which retails at $129.99. This device works in tandem with the app's algorithm to deduce a user’s 'fertility status' for each day.
While users previously have had the ability to link Apple Watch or Oura Ring to track fertility, the wristband serves as a straightforward option for those lacking access to such devices. The app is also compatible with modern Samsung Galaxy smartwatches and the Galaxy Ring, though the wristband might prove to be a more integrated alternative.
Natural Cycles received the FDA's endorsement as a contraceptive solution in 2018, amid mixed reactions over the rise in unexpected pregnancies among users. Critics have often argued about the stringency of the FDA's endorsement when compared to traditional contraceptive methods.
Originally, a manual thermometer option was offered with the app’s annual plan, priced separately at $14.50. According to company representative Lauren Hanafin, those already using a thermometer may continue to do so. Following the FDA’s approval for data collection from third-party devices, Natural Cycles has expanded its capability to use other wearable temperature sensors, including the new wristband.
As concerns about privacy grow, especially regarding period-tracking applications following certain legal changes, Natural Cycles highlights its commitment to safeguarding user privacy by only collecting essential data and implementing protective measures for user information.
Initially, in October, Natural Cycles launched the wristband alongside a new feature aimed at users experiencing perimenopause. Driven by Bluetooth 5.0 LE, the device boasts a battery life of up to 14 nights after being fully charged through USB-C.
The wristband is available for purchase at $129.99 and is also available as part of the $149.99 annual subscription plan. Existing subscribers can acquire the wristband at a discounted rate of $99.99, but only for a short period.
