Key Cofounders Departing Thinking Machines Lab for OpenAI

The AI industry witnessed a significant development as Barret Zoph and Luke Metz decided to resume their roles at OpenAI, renowned for developing ChatGPT. This announcement came on Thursday evening from Fidji Simo, who oversees applications at OpenAI.

Kylie Robison, a journalist specializing in technology, initially broke the story through a report on X, where it was claimed that Zoph was dismissed due to 'unethical actions.'

An insider at Thinking Machines revealed Zoph allegedly disclosed internal information to rival companies. Attempts by WIRED to contact Zoph for clarity were unsuccessful as he did not respond.

It was noted in Simo's internal communication that Zoph mentioned his potential exit to Thinking Machines' CEO Mira Murati on Monday, followed by his termination. She detailed that OpenAI views Zoph's situation differently than Murati.

The personnel transition marks a strategic advantage for OpenAI, especially following the recent departure of their research VP, Jerry Tworek.

Additionally, Sam Schoenholz from Thinking Machines will also be returning to OpenAI, according to the same source.

Zoph and Metz originally left OpenAI towards the end of 2024 to embark on the Thinking Machines venture with Murati, who previously served as OpenAI's CTO.
