From McKinsey Consultant to AI Startup Leader: Nick Fleisher's Journey

Nick Fleisher, formerly a consultant at McKinsey, is now at the helm of Sandstone, a new AI-driven venture aimed at revolutionizing in-house legal departments. Previously advising prestigious law firms, Fleisher found firsthand how challenging it could be to integrate new tech solutions, often meeting resistance from those in traditional legal roles.

Motivated by these challenges, Fleisher embarked on his entrepreneurial journey by founding Sandstone in August. Supported by Sequoia Capital, which led a $10 million seed funding round, the startup has garnered attention from investors like Kearny Jackson, SV Angel, and the Chainsmokers' Mantis VC, as well as legal leaders from companies such as eBay and Bilt.

AI for Contract and Legal Work Efficiency

Sandstone seeks to streamline the process of contract drafting and review for in-house legal teams by employing artificial intelligence, which adapts based on previous agreements handled by the lawyers. This system aims to serve as a comprehensive legal workflow manager, integrating various inputs from corporate communications tools like Slack and CRM systems such as Salesforce.

The platform aims to reduce lawyers' administrative burdens by proposing edits and managing the approval workflow, allowing legal professionals to focus more on substantial tasks requiring personal judgment.

From Workshop Leader to Startup Visionary

While at McKinsey, Fleisher engaged extensively with general counsels to provide tech strategy workshops, even arranging for low-cost alternatives for those who couldn't afford traditional consulting fees. Realizing a shift as general counsels began to explore AI integration due to executive directives, he partnered with Jarryd Strydom on his entrepreneurial path.

This collaboration led to a rudimentary task tracker for legal professionals, which was received positively and shared among in-house legal connections, solidifying the business concept. This foundation laid the groundwork for their pitch to Sequoia, which happened on their last day under McKinsey's employment.

Sandstone's Market Position and Potential

Though Sandstone's approach isn't unique, with competitors like Harvey and Clio addressing similar needs, Fleisher emphasizes the absence of an integrated 'system of record' specifically tailored for corporate legal teams. Sandstone aims to fill this gap, offering a cohesive platform that manages and coordinaes all legal activities.

Sequoia's partner, Bogomil Balkansky, who initially considered offering Fleisher a leadership role in a portfolio company, decided to back Fleisher’s startup. Balkansky's interest underscores the broader investor momentum toward legal technologies, evidenced by the doubling of investment in the field last year to a total of $4 billion.

Future of AI in the Legal Sector

Fleisher’s vision places AI at the core of transformative shifts within legal operations—from traditional revenue models based on billable hours to efficiencies that accelerate business operations. The legal field, with its high concentration of costly professional expertise, stands to gain substantially from AI integration.
