Framework Adjusts Desktop PC Prices Amidst Memory Crunch
Facing persistent shortages in global memory supplies, Framework has been compelled to uplift the cost of its desktop computers. Previously priced at $1,099, the Framework Desktop PC, complete with 32GB of RAM and an AMD Ryzen AI Max 385 chip, now retails for $1,139.
Framework announced, 'We've resisted this change as much as possible, but the surge in supplier costs for LPDDR5x has made it unavoidable for us to revise our desktop prices.' Their approach remains to increase prices only enough to cover the augmented expenses.
Larger RAM setups, including the higher-end Ryzen AI Max Plus 395 models, have also seen price escalations. Specifically, models outfitted with 64GB of RAM now bear a price tag of $1,639, while those with 128GB have risen from $1,999 to $2,459.
In a December briefing, Framework hinted at the potential for additional price increases, given the ongoing and severe constraints in memory supply. They mentioned the likelihood of needing to make further adjustments in the forthcoming month.
Wider Industry Implications
The crunch on memory availability isn't confined to Framework alone. As artificial intelligence firms devour enormous quantities of RAM, numerous tech developers are similarly grappling with these shortages. This has sparked price hikes from other companies producing similar tech equipment.
Sectors affected include those manufacturing single-board computers, among others, indicating a broader trend of price increments within the tech sphere stemming from constrained memory resources.
