Senator Kaine Criticizes Potential U.S. Seizure of Greenland

According to Democratic Senator Tim Kaine, there is anticipated bipartisan resistance to any attempt by the United States to acquire Greenland through force.

Senator Kaine, hailing from Virginia, confidently stated that lawmakers across both parties would oppose such military undertakings targeting Greenland.

President Trump has consistently shown interest in purchasing the vast, semi-independent island governed by Denmark. Recently, he reiterated his intentions by asserting a preference for a straightforward transaction, adding a hint about resorting to force if needed.

However, Senator Kaine firmly rejected both peaceful and forceful acquisition methods. He argued for maintaining diplomatic relations with Denmark, respecting its status as an ally and sovereign state.

Responses from leaders in both Denmark and Greenland have been sharply critical. Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen, alongside other political leaders, expressed their desire to uphold their distinct Greenlandic identity rather than becoming part of the United States or remaining solely under Danish influence.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen cautioned that an American annexation of Greenland might jeopardize the integrity of the NATO alliance, a sentiment echoed by Senator Kaine on "Face the Nation."

Senator Kaine described the potential consequences as calamitous, suggesting the move could isolate the U.S. on the global stage, transforming it into a solitary nation bereft of vital alliances, particularly pointing to Denmark's long-standing support.

He noted that discussions with Republican peers reveal a shared opposition to the notion of employing military forces to claim Greenland.

Senator Kaine declared that should the need arise, he would initiate a Senate vote to firmly prohibit any military initiatives in Greenland or towards Denmark, predicting substantial bipartisan backing to counter the President's approach.
