Discovering Taiwan: From a Brief Visit to Permanent Residence

My fascination with Asia has been a lifelong journey. Growing up near Los Angeles, specifically in Long Beach, California, I was immersed in a rich tapestry of Asian cultures. Long Beach boasts one of the largest Cambodian communities outside of Cambodia, which profoundly shaped my upbringing. It was a place where diversity was part of everyday life.

As a child, my curiosity was piqued by the distinct aromas coming from my neighbors' homes. One Cambodian family often invited me over, and their distinct dishes fascinated me, starting me on a lifelong journey of cultural discovery.

A Lifelong Connection to Asian Cultures

The diverse Asian communities I've encountered throughout my life laid the groundwork for a profound connection that guided multiple aspects of my journey. My role as a Christian missionary involved being deeply embedded in the Vietnamese community, which further fueled my interest in Asian cultures. Venturing to Vietnam in college left an indelible mark, as did traveling to Japan later on. Each visit deepened my appreciation for the region.

From my initial foray outside the US, I sensed that living abroad was inevitable.

An Unexpected Affinity for Taiwan

Among the destinations that captured my heart, Taiwan stands out. My introduction to this dynamic island happened rather unexpectedly during a layover in December 2019. The stopover lasted a day, just enough time to venture beyond the airport.

A profound connection to the energy of Taiwan stirred something within me that I hadn't felt elsewhere. Drawn by this allure, I returned soon after for an extended stay.

Exploring Taiwan revealed a hidden treasure rich with cultural depth and tranquility, akin to discovering a rare gem that's often overlooked.

The Peaceful Experience of Taiwan

In my search for a new home, I weighed options like Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia. However, Taiwan offered a unique blend of safety, advanced infrastructure, affordability, and cultural richness, which aligned perfectly with how I envision living.

The sense of security here transcends minimal crime rates; it's tangible in everyday life. In Taiwan, seamlessly moving through any part of the city at any hour is a privilege.

The city's infrastructure facilitates an effortless lifestyle without constant worry—a metropolitan reality I found astonishing.

Ease of Living and Financial Affordability

Taipei, often likened to the New York of Asia, isn't cheap by local standards, yet it remains affordable with the advantage of foreign currency exchange rates. Expats can find value, even in prime locations.

Navigating housing costs was manageable, allowing me to secure a spacious apartment in central Taipei well within my budget.

Moving Toward a New Life

My transition from the US was motivated by an intentional pursuit of new growth opportunities rather than an escape. Remaining in touch with my American roots, I now celebrate the cultural and professional connections it provides.

Relocating taught me the value in embracing change and loving one's origins while choosing a different path. For me, Taiwan signified not just departure but also a profound arrival.
