Unfolding the Hidden Potential of the Lego Smart Brick
Awarded as the Best in Show at CES 2026, the Lego Smart Brick has already captured significant attention. Before leaving Las Vegas, I visited The Lego Group's exhibit to catch one final look, only to discover an intriguing, previously unmentioned feature. This functionality could transform how adult enthusiasts engage with Lego: precise distance measurement capabilities.
Introducing the 'Lego Ruler'
Maarten Simons, a design manager at Lego, introduced a 'Lego ruler' crafted from standard Lego pieces. These bricks were segmented at intervals of 10 Lego studs—each segment spanning approximately 8 centimeters. By attaching a Smart Brick at one end and gliding another Smart Brick across the surface, the bricks showcase a unique ability.
As the Smart Brick was moved along the ruler, it changed color with each 10-stud increment, marking precise measurements. This feature wasn’t limited to just the ruler. Simons demonstrated how using a pair of Smart Bricks could measure distances between points, even vertically, with remarkable accuracy. They can reportedly track each other's location within a range of up to 5 meters.
Navigating Through Space
The innovations didn't stop there. When Simons flipped a brick in midair, it lit up upon directly facing another Smart Brick. While earlier demonstrations showed these bricks identifying their orientation and proximity, this new feature hints at much more extensive capabilities. The bricks' full potential will likely extend beyond the initial sets launching soon, despite potential interference from typical wireless signals.
Applications Beyond Play
Lego's current offerings like Star Wars sets encourage imaginative play, with children enjoying games like ship battles. However, the future could bring us far more nuanced interactions. For instance, precise aiming games could be developed.
The scope of Smart Bricks could expand into robotics. Although Lego Mindstorms offered complex programming challenges, the new capabilities of Smart Bricks lower entry barriers. For instance, a robot could autonomously navigate environments or return home without complex coding or expensive sensory equipment like Mindstorms’ intelligent systems. With its spatial awareness, Smart Bricks might simplify and enrich interactive builds.
Future Prospects
While Lego remains discreet about further developments of its Smart Play technology, the system's underpinnings are becoming clearer and more exciting. With each unveiling of its capabilities, the potential applications for both recreational and educational purposes continue to grow, making the Smart Brick increasingly alluring.
