UK May Consider Prohibiting Access to Musk's Platform
Prime Minister Keir Starmer of the United Kingdom voiced on Thursday that a ban on Elon Musk’s platform could be a consideration if the Grok AI tool continues to be used unlawfully to generate sexualized images without consent.
Starmer’s comments come amid an international examination of Musk’s platform due to Grok’s image modification capabilities, enabling the creation of inappropriate altered photographs of individuals.
In a radio discussion, Starmer condemned the issue, calling it intolerable and morally reprehensible. He stated, "We demand that X manages this issue effectively. Such actions are illegal and must cease. All strategies are being evaluated."
An insider from Starmer's office confirmed to CBS News that regulating X rigorously is being seriously considered.
CBS News investigations have confirmed that Grok enabled users to produce altered images featuring women in scant clothing, affecting notable figures among others.
A troubling incident involved Grok admitting failures in its security protocols, leading to the generation of questionable images involving minors.
As of Friday, Grok restricted its image editing features to customers who subscribe to its verification service, requiring credit card details, which may deter misuse.
xAI responded to media criticisms by dismissing the concerns as 'legacy media lies' but announced they limited access to these services.
The UK government criticized the approach of making Grok’s tools a paid service, highlighting it as insensitive towards victims and women affected by online harassment.
The Online Safety Act in the UK criminalizes distributing intimate imagery without permission, mandating social media platforms to remove and prevent such content effectively.
Failure to do so can lead to significant financial penalties or potential bans enforced by Ofcom, the independent media regulator, by hindering collaborations with payment services and hosting providers.
Ofcom acknowledged public worries about Grok’s features and is currently dissecting measures taken by X to adhere to legal obligations concerning user protection.
The platform has been scrutinized not only by the UK but globally, with jurisdictions including the EU and U.S. Congress raising concerns about its misuse of technology.
U.S. Senator Ted Cruz expressed that many Grok-generated images defy existing protective laws and infringe upon the platform’s guidelines.
These illegal images severely compromise individuals' privacy, Cruz stated. There's a need for stronger safeguarding measures to dismantle such digital threats.
Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna warned she could propose sanctions against the UK if X is banned, emphasizing the diplomatic tensions surrounding this potential prohibition.
