Meta's New Venture into Nuclear Energy with Bill Gates' Startup

In a groundbreaking move to supply its AI data centers with sufficient power, Meta has struck key partnerships with three prominent nuclear energy organizations.

Strategic Partnerships for Future Energy

Meta has entered into collaborations with TerraPower, associated with Bill Gates, Oklo, backed by Sam Altman, and Vistra. These alliances are projected to provide 6.6 gigawatts of power by 2035, an amount substantial enough to power the entire nation of Ireland.

AI Infrastructure and Nuclear Investment

A pivotal part of this initiative is the rollout of Prometheus, the initial configuration of several planned supercluster computing systems, anticipated to be operational in New Albany, Ohio, within the year. Meta is also investing in the development of innovative nuclear reactors as part of these agreements, with the earliest deployment potentially occurring by 2030.

Commitment to Covering Costs

Although Meta has not disclosed financial specifics of the agreements, they have assured that all energy expenses incurred by their data centers will be fully covered by the company, ensuring zero financial strain on consumers.

Meta's Role in the Nuclear Energy Landscape

According to Joel Kaplan, Meta’s chief global affairs officer, these collaborations with Vistra, TerraPower, Oklo, and Constellation significantly position Meta as one of the largest corporate endorsers of nuclear energy in U.S. history. Kaplan emphasized the importance of cutting-edge data centers and AI frameworks in reinforcing America’s prominence as a global AI leader.
