Introducing Kia's Economical EV2 with a 240-Mile Reach
Compact EV Parallels the Classic Soul
Kia has rolled out its latest budget-friendly electric car, named the EV2. Bearing a striking resemblance to the iconic Kia Soul—with dimensions to match—this model stands slightly reduced in both height and length. Though not a frontrunner in terms of range, the EV2 will take a little longer to charge compared to its competitors. This new model made its debut at the Brussels Motor Show, with Kia having no immediate intentions of releasing it in the US.
Utilizing the E-GMP platform developed by Kia/Hyundai, the EV2 marks the starting point in Kia's electric vehicle lineup. While its size closely mirrors that of the Soul, it delivers a much-improved aesthetic appeal and an increase in interior room. It competes with vehicles such as Volvo's EX30, though Kia has not disclosed how much this new entry will cost.
Options and Features Galore
The EV2 comes equipped with two distinct battery options. Customers can choose between a 42kWh battery offering a 197-mile range per WLTP metrics (around 170 miles according to EPA) and a 61kWh battery that promises a 278-mile WLTP range (approximately 240 miles by EPA standards). Though modest when measured against the EX30's 261-mile EPA range, pricing will be a deciding factor for the EV2. In terms of recharging power, the EV2 reaches 80% capacity in roughly 30 minutes, slightly lagging behind the 69 kWh EX30. Like other models from Kia, this vehicle supports both vehicle-to-grid and vehicle-to-load charging functionalities.
Dubbed the 'Picnic Box,' the vehicle’s cabin features clever use of space. Compared to larger vehicles, it comfortably seats passengers with generous rear legroom and a cargo space of up to 403 liters. It will be available in configurations offering either four or five seats.
Packed with Modern Day Innovations
The tech-savvy interior showcases impressive screen integration; a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, a 12.3-inch touchscreen for infotainment, and a 5-inch display dedicated to climate control form the heart of its advanced features. The ambient lighting dynamically aligns with active vehicle functions. Manual controls for climate, volume, and other settings are included, complemented by three front-positioned USB-C ports capable of up to 100W charging.
Kia has yet to disclose additional specs beyond range metrics. The production is set to commence in the year's first quarter, meaning European and other regional deliveries are expected to begin shortly thereafter. However, future availability in the United States does not appear likely at this time, as there have been no announcements concerning such plans.
