Trump and Petro Engage in Phone Conversation Amidst Rising Diplomatic Strain
On Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump and Colombian President Gustavo Petro connected over a phone call following a period of strained relations between their countries. The dialogue was aimed at addressing recent frictions, as President Trump had harshly criticized Colombia, calling it a 'failing state' and indicating military intervention as a potential consideration.
President Trump mentioned that he valued the communication and the civil tone adopted by President Petro. Both leaders anticipate a future meeting at the White House. The U.S. President noted that President Petro wanted to clarify issues concerning drug trade and other bilateral disputes.
The Colombian Embassy in Washington acknowledged the productive nature of the conversation, affirming Colombia's commitment to maintaining an open dialogue between the two nations.
The friction between the U.S. and Colombia has been growing, largely due to the Trump administration's allegations that Colombia has not adequately addressed a surge in cocaine production. Last year, President Trump labeled the nation as led by 'an illegal drug leader,' with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent accusing it of fostering drug cartels and neglecting to curb this illegal activity.
In response, President Petro, known for his left-leaning policies in Latin America, criticized the Trump administration's aggressive policies toward alleged drug trafficking vessels in a United Nations speech. Shortly after, during a protest event in New York, he challenged U.S. military personnel to disregard President Trump's orders, a move the State Department condemned as dangerous and inflammatory.
Tensions escalated following a U.S. military operation that led to the capture of former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. President Petro denounced this action as an 'act of hostility.'
In the aftermath of this operation, President Trump directed sharp criticism at Petro, stating, 'Colombia is governed by someone who enjoys trafficking cocaine to the U.S., but this won't continue for long.' When asked about potential American military involvement in Colombia, President Trump's response was, 'It’s a possibility I like.'
Petro, once part of a guerrilla group and now Colombia's first leftist president in decades, reacted firmly, asserting his commitment never to bear arms again, though stating he would reluctantly do so if it meant defending his nation.
