Roblox Enforces Age Verification for Chat Features

Roblox has introduced a regulation that mandates users to confirm their age before they can access chat functionalities on the platform. Initially announced in November 2025, this requirement was first implemented in Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands in December. Presently, it is being extended to all regions where chat services are available.

To determine a user's age, Roblox employs facial recognition technology provided by Persona, a company whose services are also utilized by Reddit. If users challenge the outcome of this age verification, they have the option to authenticate their age through identification documents. Additionally, parental permissions can adjust a minor’s age setting.

Once age is confirmed, users can engage in conversations with others in equivalent age ranges. According to Roblox, individuals are generally allowed to communicate with those in their own age tier, as well as the groups immediately above and below them. For instance, players aged 9 to 12 can chat with others in their same bracket, in the group under 9 years, and those aged 13 to 15. Players younger than 9 require parental approval to participate in chat features.

Roblox reports robust compliance with this new regulation, stating that tens of millions of users have already completed the age verification process, with expectations that many more will follow suit. In the regions where this has been enforced since early December, such as Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands, over half of all active daily users have successfully completed the verification process.

Context and Concerns

In response to rising concerns about child safety, several states have initiated legal action against Roblox, centering on issues about the protection of young users. Beyond the requirement of age verification, the company is implementing additional safeguards to enhance parental control over interactions on the platform.
