Empowering Manual Wheelchairs for Rugged Terrain
At the CES 2026, an innovative French company named WheelMove unveiled a transformative add-on designed to upgrade manual wheelchairs. This compact, motorized accessory aids movement and elevates the front wheels, enabling the wheelchair to cross challenging surfaces with ease.
The modification includes an additional 10-inch wheel paired with a 250W motor, facilitating travel speeds of up to 10 kilometers per hour (about six miles per hour) and managing inclines of up to 10 percent. This setup offers a travel range of approximately 25 kilometers (15.5 miles). Notably, the system boasts an interchangeable battery, allowing for extended explorations if a spare is carried.
Effortless Attachment and Control
As demonstrated at the WheelMove stand, users can swiftly install this attachment while seated in their wheelchair. For convenience, the control panel can be secured on an armrest or even directly on the user. Five adjustable speed settings ensure a stable and controlled descent on sloping surfaces.
Navigating Barriers and Uneven Paths
The innovation claims to significantly reduce the effort required for navigating tough terrains, such as cobblestones, grassy patches, and dirt trails—areas traditionally hard to navigate with a manual wheelchair. Additionally, it can provide access to locations previously inaccessible to wheelchair users.
The compact unit, weighing less than 8 kilograms (17.6 lbs), is designed for mobility and convenience, fitting neatly into a backpack. The developers have collaborated closely with wheelchair users for extensive field testing, ensuring the product’s practicality and effectiveness prior to its market introduction.
Launch and Availability
The innovative WheelMove is now available for preorder in France, with plans for shipping before year's end and international expansion thereafter. The anticipated retail price is approximately $6,000, reflecting its advanced capabilities and sleek design.
