Snowstorm Triggers Extended Travel Havoc in Amsterdam, Over 2,500 Flights Cancelled

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport has been a scene of ongoing disruption for travelers due to a significant snowstorm, resulting in the cancellation of more than 2,500 flights since last Friday.

The winter weather conditions have severely impacted flight schedules, with many planes forced to reroute to alternative locations. On Monday, the situation worsened as the rate of flight cancellations surged, affecting over half of all flights planned.

Serious Delays and Diversions

Among the affected flights, a KLM plane bound for London experienced an extraordinary delay. It spent almost two and a half hours taxiing on the tarmac before returning to its original gate.

Other flights, including one from Emirates, suffered prolonging on-ground waits. An Airbus A380 from Emirates sat stationary for three hours after landing before it could proceed to its departure gate, delaying its subsequent departure back to Dubai by seven hours.

Frequently diverted flights included an Air Canada flight to Germany's Frankfurt, two KLM flights from Southern America toward Paris, and a Garuda Indonesia flight redirected to Belgium.

While some flights managed to take off, they faced extensive delays averaging nearly two hours, compounded by the freezing conditions which necessitate thorough de-icing processes.

Managing Winter Challengess

According to a KLM spokesperson, the airline is working with limited resources for de-icing at Amsterdam Schiphol, which is operating at full capacity with four dedicated locations. De-icing procedures require around 30 minutes per aircraft, and this has become a bottleneck, further delaying departures.

The airport continues vigilant weather assessments to manage the crisis, but public expectations for normal operations are being tempered as only a restricted number of flights can operate under the current conditions.
