Rokid’s Innovative Smart Glasses Outshine Meta’s Ray-Bans

Rokid's Innovative Smart Glasses Outshine Meta's Ray-Bans

I've spent two years with the first generation of smart glasses and while they have served me well, a lighter frame was always on my wish list. The new Rokid glasses answer this need quite effectively.

A Game-Changing Lightweight Design

The transition from Meta Ray-Ban to Rokid’s AI Glasses Style was delightful. Weighing just 38.5 grams, they are significantly lighter than the Meta counterpart, which tends to be heavier at approximately 50 grams, varying slightly with lens type. This lightweight feel is immediately noticeable right out of the box.

Aesthetically pleasing and slightly elevated in style, the glasses include nose pads for extra comfort, essential for someone like me who tends to perspire easily. Unlike my Ray-Bans, which often slip, the silicone nose pads keep Rokid glasses securely in place. They retain the convenient touch controls and a privacy-protecting camera design on the front.

Advanced Technology and Usability

Rokid AI Glasses are powered by Qualcomm’s AR1 chipset, supporting diverse AI functions. They feature AI engines like ChatGPT and others to assist based on your needs, although my tests were limited to ChatGPT. A simple 'Hi Rokid' can summon the AI helper, which was relatively responsive despite moderate internet connectivity.

In terms of language, they come with Microsoft AI Translation for 89 languages and can support the wearer in 12 languages. For navigation, Google Maps is integrated seamlessly into their open-ear audio system, though it lacks the immersion of Meta’s audio experience.

Connecting with my iPhone was straightforward courtesy of the Hi Rokid app, which offers a user-friendly interface to tweak settings, view media, and manage accounts.

Performance and Battery Insights

Equipped with a 12MP sensor, these glasses can capture high-quality images and videos up to 4K, suitable for sharing on social media. You can record for up to 10 minutes, though the battery life still requires thorough testing.

Affordable Pricing with Some Compromises

What irks me, however, is the dedicated charging system. The need for a specific pogo-pin charger complicates travel, unlike the standard charging options from competitors. This and other design choices slightly detract from the otherwise lifestyle-centric appeal.

Priced at $299, these glasses are a more budget-friendly alternative to the new Meta Ray-Bans at $379. Despite some drawbacks, they offer a remarkable value with early-bird discounts and bundle options—making them a compelling option for those looking for prescriptive lenses and added functionalities.
