Beware Microsoft: Asus Launches Competitive 2-in-1 with Keyboard Included

Insights from ZDNET

During the CES 2026 event, I explored the new Asus ProArt PZ14, a convertible laptop that features a detachable keyboard. Unlike some other models where the keyboard is a separate purchase, Asus provides it as part of the package, avoiding an extra $150 expense.

The ProArt PZ14, identified by model number HT7407NA, is marketed as a robust mobile workstation aimed at designers and content creators who need high-caliber tools in a lightweight device. The device is incredibly portable, weighing merely 1.7 pounds (0.79kg) and featuring a slim profile of 0.35 inches (9mm).

This Asus device rivals Microsoft's Surface Pro with a 14-inch OLED screen, providing a 16:10 aspect ratio and a vibrant display at 3K resolution. The 144Hz refresh rate and full DCI-P3 color spectrum coverage make it an ideal tablet for precise color work, enhanced by its HDR support and a peak brightness of 1,000 nits.

At its core, the ProArt PZ14 is powered by the Snapdragon X2 Elite processor, which boasts 18 cores and supports up to 80 TOPS through its Neural Processing Unit. The CPU is complemented by a power-efficient 25W TDP thermal design, coupled with a memory configuration of up to 32GB of LPDDR5X RAM and a maximum storage capacity of 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD.

One unique feature is the keyboard's versatility, which can be detached and used via Bluetooth, enhancing the device's adaptability.

However, the absence of a built-in kickstand is a notable omission that may affect usage on the go. Although the back cover, complete with a stylus holder, comes with the keyboard, it may not provide the stability one expects compared to the Surface Pro's robust design.

While I did not test its functionality on my lap, the keyboard's inability to snap magnetically to the tablet's lower bezel suggests potential instability, a point where Microsoft's design may have an edge.

The ProArt PZ14 offers connectivity through two USB 4.0 Type-C ports and includes an SD card slot. Additionally, buyers benefit from a 3-month subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud, recognizing the needs of creative professionals. Produced to meet US Military Grade MIL-STD 810H standards, it also holds an IP52 rating for resistance to dust and minor water exposure, with its launch set for the second quarter of 2026.
