Uber Unveils Robotaxi Design at CES 2026

Uber, Lucid, and Nuro Collaborate on Future Robotaxi Launch in San Francisco

Uber has pulled the curtain back on its latest project at CES 2026—an innovative robotaxi poised for its inaugural journey later this year in San Francisco. This anticipated vehicle results from a strategic alliance initiated in July among Uber, Lucid Motors, and Nuro. Together, they aim to roll out a fleet of at least 20,000 electric vehicles employing Nuro's autonomous driving technology, all accessible through Uber's platform.

The presented design represents a 'production intent' version, which may undergo further refinements before hitting city streets. Nevertheless, the partnership has commenced preliminary road testing in the San Francisco Bay Area. Since last month, over 100 prototype robotaxis equipped with Nuro's technology have been navigating the roads under the watchful eye of trained operators.

This new robotaxi, a modified version of Lucid’s Gravity model, will be outfitted with an advanced array of sensors, including high-definition cameras, lidar, and radar systems. Additionally, a distinctive halo is mounted to the vehicle's roof, optimizing sensor capabilities while serving as a digital display via LEDs to offer practical information to passengers.

Interior Innovations and Passenger Experience

Inside, Uber has crafted an enhanced passenger experience, ensuring space for six occupants along with their luggage. The cabin features a digital interface that enables passengers to adjust seat temperatures, manage air conditioning, and play music at their discretion. There are also emergency options like contacting support or safely pulling the vehicle over. Even though passengers won't be in control, an informative display will illustrate the car's navigation route in real time and each maneuver it executes, such as navigating traffic lights, avoiding pedestrians, and altering lanes.

Although the robotaxi is gearing up for production, final design validation is still pending. Manufacturing is expected to commence later this year at Lucid's Arizona facility. Before its official deployment at the end of 2026, the Uber robotaxi will take center stage at CES 2026, offering a glimpse of the future of urban transit.
