Microsoft Edge's Upcoming Redesign Inspired by Copilot

Anticipate a major visual overhaul of Microsoft's Edge browser, featuring elements inspired by Copilot.

Microsoft is about to introduce significant modifications to the appearance of its Edge web browser, leveraging design aspects from its Copilot application in early Canary and development test builds.

Among the anticipated updates are a settings interface mirroring the Copilot application, freshly revamped context menus, and a revised new tab interface. Reports from Windows Central indicate that Edge will showcase rounded edges alongside the same color palettes and typography seen in Microsoft's Copilot app.

Interestingly, this refreshed look for Microsoft Edge isn't part of the browser's Copilot Mode. Microsoft seems committed to embedding Copilot's exclusive design approach into Edge. This might pave the way for similar design elements to permeate Microsoft’s other web platforms and potentially Windows itself in the foreseeable future.

Last year, Mustafa Suleyman, Microsoft AI CEO, clarified that the direction for Edge involves evolving the existing browser interface rather than creating a standalone AI browser. 'We won't launch a brand-new browser. Rather, users will experience a unified interface,' Suleyman stated.

By integrating more of the Copilot aesthetic into Edge, Microsoft aims to amplify the AI-centric ethos of its browser compared to its current functionality. The Copilot design differs significantly from the Fluent design system utilized across a number of Microsoft’s products. This shift follows the addition of most of the Inflection AI team to Microsoft in 2024, with the Copilot design closely resembling the one Inflection AI was developing.
