LG's CLOiD: The Slow But Steady Laundry Assistant
Taking center stage at the CES 2026 event, LG's robotic innovation, CLOiD, made an entrance that offered a glimpse into the future of household chores. Introduced during LG's presentation, CLOiD showcased its competency in managing laundry tasks as a step toward a home environment demanding minimal human effort.
As it glided in, CLOiD greeted the audience with its articulated hands, controlled by an internal algorithm. Accompanying the robot, Brandt Varner, LG's sales executive for the home appliance sector, instructed CLOiD to deal with a damp towel he carried. Responding in a low, human-like tone, CLOiD assured the crowd of its laundry capabilities, stating, "Let's get this laundry underway and I'll demonstrate my capabilities."
With mechanical eyes mimicking blink patterns, CLOiD approached a washing machine, which obligingly opened as it neared. It extended its mechanical arm to place the towel inside the drum, a task that spanned around 30 seconds from handover to completion. This slower pace raises questions about its efficiency in handling larger loads.
Demonstrating its multifaceted applications, CLOiD also delivered a bottle of water to another keynote speaker, Steve Scarbrough, who is LG's senior executive of its climate solutions division. "Your tone indicated a need for refreshment," CLOiD noted before executing a friendly gesture through a fist bump.
Further capabilities announced for CLOiD included retrieving milk from the refrigerator, baking pastries, and folding garments. In its concluding act, the robot addressed the audience, articulating its mission to enhance daily living experiences. However, LG remains silent regarding the prospective market availability of CLOiD.
For now, despite the lack of a concrete release timeline, LG's CLOiD continues to embody future household assistance, promising to lessen the everyday burden of chores.
