Exploring the New Wave: Alternatives to TikTok and Instagram
As a social media journalist for Business Insider, I've explored a plethora of apps throughout the year to discover fresh social platforms worth your attention.
Every year, I dive into numerous app downloads, ranging from dating platforms to avant-garde social networks. This year was no different, offering me an opportunity to sift through a broad spectrum of applications—some becoming part of my regular digital routine, and others set aside for further exploration in the upcoming year.
Emerging Essentials
Among the apps I frequent, Retro has solidified its role as a staple in my digital life. Originating from ex-Instagram talent, this photo-sharing application prioritizes intimate sharing amongst close connections. I've found joy in using Retro to share curated photo collections with a select few friends.
Also capturing my interest are the apps PI.FYI and Airbuds. PI.FYI is an extension of Perfectly Imperfect's cultural insights, offering recommendations across music, film, and more. On the other hand, Airbuds creates a melodic landscape by sharing the musical tracks my friends enjoy, serving as my sonic exploration companion.
When organizing social gatherings, Corner comes into play. Though familiar to many, its recent update with AI-enhanced search functions tailored to Gen Z needs, makes it invaluable for discovering the latest local hotspots.
Reviving Old Favorites
Pinterest has re-emerged as a frequent stop in my app browsing. Since the leadership shift to CEO Bill Ready in 2022, the platform has pivoted significantly with a focus on search and shopping functionalities. From fashion choices to interior design, this is my go-to spot for creative inspiration and future purchases.
It's important to note that AI also plays a role within Pinterest, equipping users with tools to tailor their AI interaction levels.
Laughter Through Innovation
Danger Testing, an initiative by Carlos Mayers and Marc Mueller, stands out with its innovative app releases. These creative projects range from whimsical Labubu simulations to apps that reimagine phone videos as instant memes, tapping into an ironic humor reminiscent of early app days.
What Lies Ahead in 2026
The upcoming year promises an array of apps ripe for exploration. With AI permeating the dating app scene, I'll be seeking platforms that foster tangible social interactions and embrace offline engagement.
A few apps I'm eager to test include Rodeo, a social utility that simplifies group activities by transforming digital interactions into real-world plans. Silk, meanwhile, rekindles the creative essence of blogging and moodboarding, currently restricting access through a waitlist but reminiscent of Tumblr's prime.
Lastly, Wabi, a burgeoning tool developed for coding mini applications, is on my radar. Created by Eugenia Kuyda, Wabi aims to democratize software creation, possibly inspiring a new avenue for app creation in my repertoire.
