Venezuelan Leaders Decry Maduro's Detention, Labeling It as 'Abduction'
In the aftermath of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro's removal from power, high-ranking officials within his administration voiced vehement objections to the military action and intimated plans to oppose U.S. intervention.
President Maduro was extracted from Venezuela through a 'broad-scale operation,' according to President Trump. The operation, intended to bring him to trial over drug trafficking allegations, signaled the end of his lengthy administration.
Delcy Rodriguez Asserts Maduro's Role as Sole President
Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez harshly criticized Maduro's detention, calling it a 'barbaric act' and a violation of Venezuela’s autonomy during a televised address. She demanded Maduro’s release, reaffirming his role as the rightful leader of the nation.
Her comments paralleled dialogue US President Trump noted, suggesting potential collaboration with Rodriguez, although he acknowledged her limited options. Trump asserted that U.S. involvement aims to stabilize Venezuela prior to a secure transition.
Rodriguez reiterated Venezuela’s openness to discussions about drug-related issues while accusing external forces of seeking to dominate the nation.
National Defense Response and Military Mobilization
With the onset of U.S. actions, Venezuela declared a state of external disturbance, mobilizing its military forces as per Maduro’s directives.
Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López pledged military resistance, condemning U.S. actions as aggression. Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello advocated for national calm to thwart potential invasion facilitation.
Attorney General Tarek William Saab denounced the operation as cowardly, stating it resulted in civilian casualties. Venezuelan diplomats appealed to the UN for condemnation of U.S. tactics supposedly aimed at appropriating Venezuelan resources.
Opposition's Stance on Leadership Transition
Opposition figure Maria Corina Machado hailed Maduro’s removal and advocated for Edmundo Gonzalez’s recognition as president. Although she champions readiness for a democratic transition, Trump expressed skepticism regarding her political influence.
Gonzalez declared readiness for national reconstruction, signifying the complexities surrounding potential leadership.
