Zelensky's Ongoing Efforts to Counter Putin's Influence on Trump

At a recent conference at Mar-a-Lago, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky joined President Donald Trump, masking his true sentiments behind a diplomatic smile as Trump lauded Russia's supposed goodwill towards Ukraine. Trump assured reporters that Russian leader Vladimir Putin genuinely desires a peaceful resolution, much to Zelensky's dismay.

This meeting exemplified yet again the American President's inclination towards Moscow in the ongoing European conflict. Despite this, Zelensky secured a promise of continued albeit unstable support from Washington, affirming Ukraine's resilience.

Efforts towards achieving a peace settlement fell short, with Zelensky presenting significant concessions, such as a proposal to allow citizens to vote on territorial cessions to Russia, in hopes of gaining Trump's approval.

Nevertheless, Zelensky succeeded in securing certain assurances from Trump, who had previously set a Christmas deadline for a ceasefire or threatened to curtail U.S. intelligence—a decision that would critically disadvantage Ukraine in wartime. Trump, however, later remarked, "I'm not imposing any deadlines."

During discussions at his Florida estate, Trump expressed optimism post-dialogue with Zelensky, although he admitted there's a possibility that talks could deteriorate.

In Trump's initial year as President, Presidents of European states, alongside Zelensky, strived to convince him of the facts of Moscow's aggression under Putin, holding him responsible for the unprovoked aggression sparking the most severe conflict in Europe post-World War II.

While Trump has occasionally shown solidarity with Ukraine, even pondering the recovery of territories ceded to Russia, his stance is variable, often aligning once again with perspectives favoring Putin.

Zelensky extended offers of concessions in his latest discussion with Trump, temporarily preventing a stronger shift in the U.S. President’s leanings towards a Russian standpoint. However, Trump's persistent belief that Ukraine is under time pressure aligns with Putin's strategies.

American intelligence agencies maintain that Putin’s motivations are unchanged, seeking to dominate Ukraine and potentially reclaim former Soviet territories. Nevertheless, Trump's Intelligence Director, Tulsi Gabbard, has downplayed these assessments, attributing them to a biased intelligence community.

Shortly after conferring with Trump, Putin commanded an advance on Zaporizhzhia, a city considerably distant from the contested Donbas, indicating further aggression.

Brian Taylor, from the Moynihan Institute, highlighted Trump's natural preference for Putin, casting doubt on any potential genuine peace deal absent a Ukrainian compromise.

Taylor argued that if Trump recognized Putin's unwillingness, he might enhance sanctions and fortify support for Ukraine, though achieving this remains as challenging as ever. Despite almost a year passing in Trump's second term, persistent endeavors by Zelensky and European officials continue.

The Kremlin alleged Ukraine orchestrated a drone attack on Putin’s residence, which Moscow claims influences its negotiation position. Kyiv denies any such actions occurred.

Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov, via Telegram, accused Kyiv of state terrorism, suggesting a shift in Russia's negotiation stance. Meanwhile, Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, re-entered the diplomatic scene to aid in the sensitive peace discussions.

A high-ranking Russian official claimed the alleged attack angered Trump, but Zelensky on social media called Russia's claims fallacies designed to justify renewed assault efforts.

“Together with President Trump’s team, we are striving for true peace,” Zelensky stated. He dismissed the ‘residence strike’ as fictional, aimed at justifying further aggression against Ukraine, highlighting Russia's perpetual disregard for genuine diplomatic resolutions.

Frederick Kagan, coordinating with the Institute for the Study of War, emphasized that the dialogue yielded no major shift in Trump’s position, a potential diplomatic boon for Kyiv.

Kagan reflected on ongoing U.S.-Ukraine discussions touching upon critical security assurances, with Ukraine requesting more substantial and extended guarantees than those currently proposed by Trump.

Kagan concluded, "A deal remains elusive until formally concluded," underlining the tentative nature of these intense negotiations.
