FIFA President Justifies High World Cup Ticket Costs Amid Unprecedented Demand

During an announcement event for the 2026 FIFA World Cup schedule held in Washington, D.C., Gianni Infantino, the President of FIFA, addressed concerns about the steep ticket prices for the upcoming tournament.

Infantino highlighted the extraordinary interest, revealing that the latest sales period has already garnered requests for over 150 million tickets. This number marks a historic peak in demand.

He also assured that a significant portion of the tournament's revenues, set to take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will be reinvested into the global development of soccer. Infantino asserted, "Football in 150 countries relies on the financial support FIFA provides."

Public Reaction and Price Details

Speaking at the World Sports Summit in Dubai for the first time since ticket sales reopened, Infantino faced the backlash over ticket costs from the public. Fans expressed their discontent with prices ranging from $140 for early-round matches to $2,735 for the opening game in Los Angeles featuring the U.S. team against Paraguay.

Prices escalate further for knockout matches, with the least expensive seats for the final in New Jersey being priced at $4,185, while premium spots will cost $8,680.

Ticket Availability and FIFA's Justification

In reaction to the pricing uproar, FIFA disclosed plans to reserve some tickets for fans of the participating nations for each of the 104 matches, though these will represent only a minor fraction of the available tickets.

Infantino commented on the situation, acknowledging the heated discussions about the ticket system and reiterating the unparalleled demand evidenced by 150 million requests since December 11. "The World Cup's allure is undeniable," he noted.

Backed by revenue intentions that aim to nurture football beyond this event, FIFA argued that the heightened ticket prices are justified. "The income generated from the World Cup is a crucial investment in football's future worldwide," Infantino emphasized in Dubai.

The current sales period, which began recently, will continue until January 13. Applications for tickets across the 104 games are being accepted irrespective of submission date, which does not affect the likelihood of securing tickets, according to FIFA.
