The self-driving car company, Waymo, has explained the issues faced by its autonomous taxi service during a power failure in San Francisco that occurred over the weekend.

Power Outage Impact on Operations

According to Waymo, the weekend power outage fundamentally disrupted their operations. Their autonomous rides correctly identified the darkened intersections as four-way stops, a measure based on safety protocols. However, this led to a significant challenge – scale.

Waymo vehicles are programmed to occasionally pause for a confirmation process when traffic lights are out, ensuring the safest decision is made. On this occasion, they processed over 7,000 unlit signals, creating an unexpected surge in these confirmation checks.

This surge led to a queue that, in some instances, resulted in delays, exacerbating traffic woes on streets already burdened by congestion.

Response to the Traffic Situation

Snippets from social media illustrated this issue vividly, showing clusters of Waymo's driverless cars assembled at gridlocked intersections.

Due to the outage affecting approximately 130,000 customers of Pacific Gas & Electric, Waymo made the decision to temporarily suspend its services. Ride operations have since been resumed following the event.

Regulatory bodies like the California Public Utilities Commission are currently investigating the specifics of this incident to prevent future occurrences.

Waymo had incorporated these safety checks during the initial rollout out of caution. However, reflecting on the recent outage, the company mentioned it is refining these checks to better manage large-scale disruptions.

To enhance the robotaxi's context awareness during such incidents, fleet-wide updates are being introduced, allowing for more decisive navigation.

In response to requests from city officials to keep roads clear for emergency services, Waymo ceased operations during the peak of the incident recovery.

Despite the growth trajectory, the journey hasn't been without hurdles. In 2022, the rollout expanded to San Francisco, yet the company faced challenges such as a need to recall certain software impacting its vehicles. There was also public outcry over incidents involving animal harm.
