Deloitte carried out an extensive review over eight weeks examining how Whole Foods utilizes Microsoft software, uncovering critical efficiency setbacks for Amazon.

The study observed outdated and disjointed Microsoft tool application, poor security measures, and complicated user management, causing productivity issues when interacting with Amazon.

Deloitte proposed a two-year plan for Whole Foods to gradually integrate its corporate workers into Amazon's backend system, eventually extending to front-line employees. This strategy aims to ensure minimal disruption and financial benefits.

The findings from May underscore the prolonged struggle Amazon faces to seamlessly include Whole Foods into its operations, almost a decade after its acquisition.

Strategic Alignment and Development

Headed by the new grocery lead, Jason Buechel, Amazon is focusing efforts on blending Whole Foods more closely with its Fresh grocery section, pushing for a cohesive vision called the 'One Grocery' initiative.

Amazon relies considerably on Microsoft for its fundamental productivity suites like word processing and spreadsheet tools, despite its several attempts to innovate its proprietary business applications.

Identified Core Challenges

Deloitte pinpointed six primary concerns needing resolution for business streamlining, such as employees needing to constantly switch between various platforms and lacking comprehensive data retention policies complicate compliance.

Security upgrades are essential and can be achieved by implementing stricter device controls and blocking emails lacking authentication.

Juggling distinct identities for Whole Foods and Amazon accounts remains a necessity. Meanwhile, restrictions on Microsoft's external-sharing policies have led teams to seek out alternative collaboration tools, complicating email security enhancements.

A Gradual Integration Pathway

Deloitte's phased approach suggests that Whole Foods' corporate teams would initially switch to Amazon's email and OneDrive environments, with later adaptations for more complex systems like SharePoint and Teams.

Ultimately, consolidating all workflows under Amazon's umbrella will enhance security alignment and reduce costs.

It's uncertain if Amazon and Whole Foods will adopt all Deloitte's recommendations, but this restructuring reflects a shift toward unifying their workforce under Amazon.
