AI Tools Manipulate Women's Photos Into Bikini Images
AI-driven technologies are being employed to modify images of women, transforming fully clothed pictures into those showing them in bikinis without their permission. Instructions on how to exploit these generative AI tools for such manipulation are being shared among users.
One forum post, now removed, exchanged tips on using Google's AI model to create images of women in scanty attire. Although many submissions were entirely AI-created, one user requested assistance with altering a photo of a woman in a sari into a bikini-clad image, which resulted in a deepfake being made.
A representative from Reddit clarified that sharing or creating unauthorized intimate imagery is against their policies. The subreddit involved, known for discussing AI-generated images, was banned for breaching such guidelines.
The widespread use of tools that easily fabricate realistic, albeit false, images is a growing issue, particularly regarding harassment through unauthorized deepfakes of women. Websites exist that permit users to upload personal photos to modify them into undressed images via AI.
Platform Responses to AI Image Misuse
Mainstream AI chatbots generally restrict the generation of inappropriate content, including those from Google and OpenAI, which are designed to block harmful image creation. Nevertheless, methods to bypass these restrictions appear to be evolving, as evidenced by discussions on skirt-tightening techniques in AI edit requests.
Upon inquiry, Google's spokesperson reiterated the company's stance against using their tools for creating explicit imagery, emphasizing ongoing improvements to ensure compliance with their policies.
Similarly, OpenAI acknowledged adjustments made to their content policies regarding adult imagery in non-explicit settings, underscoring actions against users violating their terms through unauthorized likeness alterations.
Despite company efforts, dialogues about making such images persist, with Reddit recently removing public advice for changing clothing in photos into swimwear.
Risks and Responsibilities in AI Image Generation
Corynne McSherry, a legal expert, cautions that creating sexualized deepfakes is a significant concern with AI image generators. She emphasizes the importance of scrutinizing how such tools are used and holding those who misuse them accountable.
She argues that AI tools can have diverse applications beyond the creation of deepfakes, and stresses the need for both individual and corporate accountability to prevent potential abuses.
