Valve Ends Production of the Last LCD Steam Deck Model
The New Starting Price for Steam Deck Enthusiasts: $549 Instead of $399
Those still considering joining the Steam Deck craze will face a slightly higher cost of entry now, as Valve transitions exclusively to OLED models. In an update on the Steam Deck webpage, Valve declared the cessation of production for the Steam Deck LCD 256GB version, stating that once current stock is exhausted, it will be permanently unavailable. At this article's publication, the $399 variant of the Steam Deck, which featured an LCD screen and 256GB of storage, is no longer obtainable due to stock depletion. Even the refurbished units of LCD models offered by Valve have been completely sold out.
Switching to the OLED version of the Steam Deck represents a significant enhancement, delivering improved battery longevity, a larger screen, and a superior refresh rate. Despite this, the LCD model was appreciated for its affordable price point, making it a great entryway to cost-effective gaming handhelds. Luckily for current owners of the LCD model, Valve intends to continue providing software updates, keeping these devices supported in the future.
At present, prospective customers must select from the new base price of $549 for the 512GB OLED model or opt for a 1TB upgrade, which increases the cost to at least $649. Valve's decision to halt production of its remaining LCD model is not unexpected, given its prior discontinuation of both the 512GB and 64GB options, which were available when the Steam Deck initially launched in 2022.
