Is Artificial Intelligence Behind This Video? Google Gemini Could Help You Decide

Distinguishing between genuine videos and those generated by AI technology is becoming increasingly challenging. However, Google's new tool may provide some clarity.

Google recently introduced features allowing its tool, Gemini, to discern if a video or image has been crafted or altered using Google's own AI innovations.

A notable limitation is that the tool's capabilities are restricted to identifying videos that involve Google’s technologies. Despite this, it serves as a valuable resource for verifying what content you encounter.

To verify a video's authenticity using Gemini, you simply upload the clip and ask, 'Was this created with Google AI?' Gemini will then analyze both the visual and audio aspects for a hidden identifier unique to Google AI creations. It can respond with, 'No SynthID found' or specify sections with a detection, such as 'SynthID identified in video between 5-20 seconds, and audio from 10-20 seconds.'

The video files can be up to 100 MB and 90 seconds in length.

Evaluating the Effectiveness of Gemini's AI Detection

To explore this tool's precision, I tested videos from three sources: Gemini, Bing, and another AI. After storage and transfer across multiple devices, these videos were uploaded to Gemini for evaluation.

Gemini ascertained that the video it generated had its proprietary SynthID in both video and audio tracks. For the additional videos, it correctly reported an absence of Google marks, unable to conclude about other AI involvements.

I pressed further, querying Gemini about AI video production characteristics it recognizes. In moments, Gemini highlighted seven common traits indicating AI generation. Hence, even if a video wasn’t made with Gemini, the tool still supplies informative judgments concerning its authenticity.

Google confirms that its verification for images and videos is accessible in all territories and languages that support the Gemini app.
