Trump Administration Targets Leading Climate Research Institution
The White House has announced plans to dismantle a prominent environmental research center, citing issues with what they describe as 'climate alarmism'. This decision, despite significant pushback, will affect the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), located in Boulder, Colorado.
Established in 1960, the NCAR has served as a cornerstone for atmospheric and climate science. However, according to the administration's Office of Management and Budget, any key projects, such as vital weather research, will be transferred to different organizations or locations.
Director Vought noted that the institution is seen by the administration as a major proponent of climate change warnings, which they seek to curb.
Reports of the dismantling plans first surfaced in USA Today, highlighting the intention to commence actions against NCAR immediately.
Kevin Trenberth, a senior scholar at NCAR, expressed concerns that dissolving the lab would significantly impede scientific advancements in climate research.
Trenberth, who also holds an honorary position in New Zealand, emphasized that the center is integral to worldwide climate science breakthroughs.
Antonio Busalacchi, president at the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research, which manages NCAR, warned that breaking up the center could detract from the nation’s ability to handle natural disasters effectively.
In a statement, Colorado’s Democratic Governor Jared Polis remarked he wasn't informed about these plans by federal officials. He highlighted the center's role in providing crucial weather data that ultimately saves lives and properties.
Polis further warned that these actions could risk public safety and undermine scientific efforts while reducing competitive advantages globally.
The Trump administration, in its subsequent term, has actively sought to dismantle measures supporting renewable energy and climate change mitigation, which were put into place under President Joe Biden.
In various statements, President Trump has ridiculed climate change, calling it a hoax and the greatest deception against humanity.
