Tesla's Autonomous Vehicles Spotted Without Monitors

In a significant shift, Tesla's driverless vehicles were observed functioning without any human supervisors on the streets of Austin this past weekend.

Previously, Tesla's self-driving cars in Austin and San Francisco had been operating with safety monitors equipped with an emergency stop mechanism. This system provided a backup akin to systems from other companies like Waymo, who do not require such measures.

Transitioning to Full Autonomy

Elon Musk has commented that these human overseers exist not due to a lack in Tesla's technology, but from an abundant caution towards safety. He assured that these safety aids would be unnecessary by the close of 2025.

Musk may be realizing his vision sooner than anticipated. Vehicles seen cruising without occupants were shared on X, indicating that autonomous trials had officially launched in Austin.

Tesla vs. Waymo: The Competitive Landscape

While Waymo marches ahead, with extensive testing and future expansion plans, Tesla maintains an edge through its expansive fleet, which Musk believes will soon achieve full autonomy. However, this stance ignores the fact that most contemporary Teslas lack the capabilities for driverless functionality.

Tesla may be inching toward the goal of monitored-free operation this year, yet hasn’t introduced these vehicles to paying passengers. Moreover, the company has not published comprehensive data to match the performance of its technology against standard driving practices. Most narratives rely on anecdotal experiences from Tesla enthusiasts rather than confirmable evaluations.
