Flash Flood Alert and Evacuation in Seattle Vicinity Following Levee Break

Authorities have declared an evacuation directive for the Seattle region after a levee failure led to a flash flood alert, as stated by officials.

On Monday, the National Weather Service announced a flash flood warning given a levee rupture in Tukwila, a suburb within King County neighboring Seattle. The evacuation alert pertains to sections of King County.

“The situation is perilous, and access paths might become inaccessible swiftly,” advised the Seattle branch of the National Weather Service. “Residents should proceed north or south to avoid the floodwaters.”

The advisory impacts the residents and commerce east of the Green River in Tukwila, Renton, and Kent areas, as per the National Weather Service. Individuals in these areas have been urged to evacuate without delay.

Return of Rain to Pacific Northwest Expected Soon

King County Executive Girmay Zahilay emphasized the gravity of the unfolding event in a media briefing on Monday, describing it as a critical and evolving scenario.

The breach along the Green River's levee occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. local time, according to Zahilay, who also mentioned ongoing repair efforts.

“As the rain recommences, conditions remain volatile with water levels rising and shifting in unforeseen patterns,” Zahilay remarked. “Residents must heed the guidance of experts, responders, and law enforcement.”

Guardsmen from the Washington National Guard are en route to bolster King County's response.

The Pacific Northwest anticipates more rain this week with flood warnings issued for various areas.

Previously, Washington state experienced unprecedented river flooding and submerged communities following over 15 inches of rain in certain locales.

Officials noted that previous atmospheric river events had already caused flooding in sections of the Green River.
