Android Introduces Live Video Sharing for 911 Calls

A groundbreaking update for Android users is being introduced, allowing them to transmit a live video feed to 911 dispatchers during emergencies. This feature aims to enhance the support provided in critical situations.

Imagine calling 911 in a medical emergency, and the dispatcher guiding you through life-saving procedures like CPR via a live video session. Emergency Live Video is designed for precisely these scenarios. It also proves invaluable when an individual is disoriented, under pressure, or unable to articulate the situation clearly.

When making a 911 call, responders now have the capability to request a live video stream. The important aspect is that the caller retains control – the video transmission begins only when they provide consent. For privacy, the video feed is automatically encrypted, and the caller can halt the streaming whenever needed.

Innovation in Emergency Response

This feature mirrors the functionality seen with the Emergency SOS Live Video available to iPhone users since 2024, which affords them the option to share live video feeds or media from their photo libraries.

According to Alastair Breeze, an Android Software Engineer, the Emergency Live Video feature is initially being deployed in collaboration with RapidSOS, Motorola Solutions, and Prepared911 in the United States. This rollout is accessible on devices operating on Android 8 or later, provided Google Play services are active.
