In a significant announcement in Tokyo, leaders from OpenAI, Anthropic, and other major players have unveiled an initiative poised to bring order to the chaotic world of AI agents. This initiative, backed by an industry consortium, is poised to set new standards.

Establishing Standards for AI Agents

The Artificial Intelligence Agent Foundation (AAIF) is dedicated to creating and speeding up a framework for AI agents. Supported by leading companies in technology and cloud services, the AAIF aims to establish a foundation that embraces open-source principles to ensure AI platforms are universally interoperable and transparent.

Operating under the umbrella of the Linux Foundation, the AAIF will serve as a neutral platform for open-source AI agent projects.

At its core, the AAIF represents a new tier of AI infrastructure where agents can autonomously plan, execute tasks, and interact with various tools and other agents. These interactions will span across Large Language Modules (LLMs) and diverse information systems, all governed by open-source and community contributions as opposed to isolated proprietary systems.

The Three Pillars of the AAIF Strategy

The foundation's strategy hinges on three pivotal technological advancements: a universal protocol named MCP for linking models to tools, AGENTS.md to specify agent capabilities, and an implementation known as Goose. These elements collectively aim to create a unified software framework, furthering this transformative vision.

In an era where AI agents execute complex multi-step operations surpassing basic chatbots, a universal framework is indispensable. Microsoft, along with other stakeholders, is committed to this open and progressive approach.

Initially, the foundation will focus on developing and refining the components of MCP, AGENTS.md, and Goose under an open governance model, while also expanding to include more projects that align with their mission.
