Reflecting on 2025: Tech's Key Winners
As 2025 comes to a close, it’s time to spotlight those who had the most profound influence over the past year—the individuals, brands, innovations, and movements that shaped the course of events. Predictably at the forefront are the technological billionaires.
Oxfam's latest analysis reveals that the top ten wealthiest billionaires in the U.S.—all tech tycoons except Warren Buffet—saw their fortunes swell by a staggering $698 billion this year. A portion of these riches has been channeled into supporting President Trump lavishly, with Elon Musk allegedly contributing close to $300 million to Trump and Republican associates, alongside several tech firms that have helped fund the president’s White House ballroom project.
AI's Unstoppable Surge
Advancements from tech giants such as Meta, Google, and OpenAI have revolutionized AI video technology, making it more lifelike and accessible than ever. AI-generated video content is now omnipresent, not only dominating your social media feeds on platforms like Facebook and Instagram but also in a dedicated space on Meta for users' imaginative AI creations. The stats are astounding: OpenAI’s Sora, which enables users to craft AI videos featuring actual people, reached a million downloads in just a short period, while Google's Veo amassed over 40 million video creations within weeks of its release.
Despite the mixed impact, there are still positives, like the acclaim for the Switch 2.
Corporate Tug-of-War over Warner Bros. Discovery
In a bold move, Paramount is challenging Netflix's attempt to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), making a substantial takeover offer of $108 billion aimed directly at WBD shareholders. This bid, which expires on January 8, is an all-cash proposal offering $30 per share, surpassing Netflix’s accepted offer of $27.75 per share.
Netflix's previous offer comprised $23.25 in cash and $4.50 in Netflix stock per share. Unlike Netflix, which is interested solely in WBD's studios and streaming services, Paramount seeks to acquire the entire company. However, any acquisition would face significant regulatory challenges.
President Trump has cautioned that the Netflix proposal might face significant hurdles, noting a combined Netflix and HBO could control a third of the U.S. streaming video sector.
Farewell to a Gaming Icon
At the end of 2025, Katsuhiro Harada will leave Bandai Namco, marking the end of an era in gaming. Harada, synonymous with Tekken, is leaving with a heartfelt message shared online alongside a special DJ mix. His presence has been pivotal in the fighting game scene for thirty years.
Expressing his gratitude, Harada penned: 'My deepest thanks go to all my supporters, global communities, and colleagues who have joined me on this incredible journey throughout the decades.'
