AI-Generated Copycat of King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard Evades Detection on Spotify
Music Withdrawal by the Band Over the Summer
Despite efforts by Spotify to control the spread of AI-created music, a mimic of King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard's work appeared on the platform without being caught. The Australian experimental rock group, a known Spotify critic, removed their music during the summer. The decision was sparked by revelations about former CEO Daniel Ek's investments in an AI-driven military company. Recently, a Reddit user was offered an AI-generated imitation of one of their tracks in Spotify's Release Radar list. This imitator, labeled as King Lizard Wizard, produced an album that reused titles and lyrics from the authentic band. Although screenshots of the fraudulent artist were captured, it has reportedly been removed; now, searches yield only the genuine band's page.
The counterfeit King Gizzard album went undetected by the platform for several weeks until it was highlighted on social media. The Reddit discussion reveals other instances where attempts were made to deceive listeners with AI-produced copies of known bands. In response to such issues, Spotify introduced a spam filter in September and established guidelines for revealing AI use in hosted content and combating AI impersonations. This particular situation, especially involving an artist who left due to disputes with Spotify, casts doubt on the effectiveness of these new policies.
