Meta Delays Mixed Reality Glasses Launch to 2027

Internal Communication Reveals Postponement of Project Phoenix

Meta has decided to postpone the launch of its upcoming mixed reality glasses, now anticipated to debut in the first part of 2027. This decision is informed by an internal communication from Maher Saba, Vice President at Meta's Reality Labs Foundation. Previously scheduled for a 2026 release, the project, referred to internally as 'Phoenix,' will now see its official unveiling later than initially planned.

Ensuring Quality: Meta's Strategic Delay

Another internal document from Meta leaders outlines that this postponement is intended to refine and enhance the reliability of the final product. In correspondence from Gabriel Aul and Ryan Cairns, it's noted that the additional time allows the company substantial opportunity to perfect the product. Although specific details about the Phoenix project remain scarce, prior reports suggest the glasses might adopt a goggles-style design and incorporate an external power source, reminiscent of the Apple Vision Pro's battery system.

Expanding Horizons with New Wearables

Additionally, the company is investing in a limited edition wearable, codenamed 'Malibu 2,' as per Saba's memo. In a move indicating expansion beyond their current product line of smart glasses and virtual reality headsets, Meta has recently acquired Limitless, a firm known for its development of an AI wearable, Pendant. These strategic initiatives hint at Meta's ambition to diversify its technological offerings.
