Interior Designers Evaluate Top Artificial Christmas Trees

Introduction

Navigating the world of artificial Christmas trees can be a daunting task, especially with the abundance of options available online. Selecting the perfect tree involves wondering about its realism, stability, and durability.

To help make this decision easier, we conducted an interesting experiment. WIRED reviewed the 10 most popular artificial Christmas trees, inviting expert interior designers to judge them based on appearance and quality.

Blind Assessment

In a Kansas studio, 10 assorted artificial trees from leading brands like Balsam Hill, King of Christmas, and National Tree Company were put to the test. Professional designers judged these trees without knowing their brands, prices, or the assembly challenges they posed.

After the evaluations, the 10 volunteer assemblers took the trees home to offer additional feedback on the home assembly and decoration process.

The Selection Process

Researching reviews and feedback online, we shortlisted 10 highly-rated trees such as Balsam Hill's Classic Blue Spruce and National Tree Company's Dunhill Fir. These trees stood between 7.5 feet tall, creating a consistent comparison under studio lighting.

Assembly was done with oversight to ensure fairness, using simple tools, and assessment was conducted with a focus on balance, needle integrity, and general aesthetic.

Scoring Criteria

Each of the trees was rated on a five-category rubric, accumulating a maximum of 75 points. The overall aim was to identify aesthetics purely based on appearance, without any brand bias.

The top-rated tree scored 72 out of 75, showcasing its standout quality. In contrast, the lowest score received was 32, with judges generally awarding lenient scores.

Leading Artificial Trees

Best Overall: Balsam Hill Vermont White Spruce

Famous for their realistic appearance, Balsam Hill’s Vermont White Spruce emerged as the clear favorite. Its full, luxurious look and easy ornament-hanging design wowed the judges, earning its status as the “Hermès of Christmas trees.”

Despite its elegance and robust branches, this tree also offers modern tech features like app-controlled lighting.

Most Snowy: King of Christmas King Flock

King of Christmas brings the winterytale to life with their King Flock tree. The thick branches simulate the beauty of freshly fallen snow, creating an enchanting appearance that's hard to rival. It manages to please both flocking skeptics and fans alike.

Despite its beautiful appearance, be prepared for some difficulty when hanging ornaments, as their fluffy fullness can be challenging to navigate.

Timeless Charm: King of Christmas Cypress Spruce

Exuding comfort and tradition, this Cypress Spruce from King of Christmas is perfect for those seeking a nostalgic holiday feel. With simple built-in lights and realistic needle quality, it remains a favorite for its balance of elegance and simplicity.

While straightforward to assemble, its substantial weight may require some muscle during setup.

Durable Choice: Balsam Hill Balsam Fir

Offering a vibrant light-green palette, the Balsam Hill Balsam Fir is built to bear heavy decorations effortlessly. While realistic at a distance, close inspection reveals minor details that slightly detract from authenticity.

Despite this, its excellent durability and easy setup make it popular for ornament-laden celebrations.

Simplest Setup: Balsam Hill Fraser Fir

This Fraser Fir model earns its acclaim for a swift setup process, needing minimal fluffing to look its best. An excellent choice for those preferring ease over intricate decoration.
