Revolutionizing Heineken Beer Production with a 100MWh Heat Battery
Pioneering Heat Battery Technology in Europe's Beverage Sector
The process of brewing beer contributes significantly to pollution, largely because traditional gas boilers are utilized to produce the massive amounts of steam necessary. In an innovative move, Heineken has partnered with a battery and electrical technology company to introduce a groundbreaking solution at its facility in Lisbon, Portugal. This involves the construction of a 100MWh heat battery, powered by both the electrical grid and solar energy, to supply steam efficiently while simultaneously curbing carbon output.
Heat batteries operate by using materials such as ceramics to store heat, which is later released in a manner akin to how conventional batteries handle electricity. At Heineken's brewery, a Rondo Heat Battery (RHB) designed with refractory materials will gather heat and subsequently transform it into steam. Once operational, this system will be sustained by solar power produced on-site alongside renewable electricity from EDP, delivering 7 MW of steam—sufficient to keep the brewery functional around the clock. Slated for activation in April 2027, it will stand among the largest heat battery installations in the global beverage industry.
Achieving high-temperature steam using electricity represents a formidable challenge, marking this development as a notable breakthrough for the industry. This initiative aligns with Heineken's strategic vision of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. Additionally, it serves as a victory for Portugal, which has set an ambitious goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030.
Heineken will adopt a hands-free approach with this endeavor, as EDP is tasked with the construction and operation of the system, while Rondo will provide the battery technology. Heineken's Vice President, Magne Setnes, remarked, "This project not only supports our transition from conventional energy but also exemplifies how innovative thinking and robust partnerships can enhance our entire supply chain."
