To make a definitive decision, WIRED decided to test popular artificial trees from renowned brands. Ten samples from Balsam Hill, King of Christmas, and the National Tree Company were assembled by volunteers in a neutral space with a trio of interior designers providing their unbranded, unbiased assessments.

Blind Judging for Authentic Results

Judging was done without letting the designers know the brands or costs, focusing solely on aesthetics and tactile feedback. The results were surprising, unveiling that a larger or shinier package doesn’t guarantee the best product.

Selection Process and Criteria

Research began by reviewing esteemed sources and recommendations, filtering out the top-rated artificial trees available. Options included notable Balsam Hill’s Blue Spruce and the National Tree Company’s popular Dunhill Fir, all standing at a uniform height of 7.5 feet, priced between $170 and $1,700.

These trees were gathered and scrutinized under identical lighting conditions sans decorations, involving a substantial collection worth $9,540 set up in a hired studio.

Evaluation and Assembly Method

The trees arrived at my residence and were moved to a Kansas-based photo studio for assembly and review. A group of 10 testers organized the setup, monitored for consistent conditions, partaking in both construction and preparation. Each assembler chose a station and opened numbered boxes, setting up the trees with assigned timelines.

Judges Scorecard and Evaluation

A panel made up of Kansas City-based interior design experts rated the trees on five critical aspects, utilizing a 25-point system: realism, fullness, branch integrity, needle quality, and overall presentation. Scores ranged significantly, with the best receiving 72 out of 75 points.

The judges' principal observations and ratings helped pinpoint which tree excelled when no brand influences or price signals were involved.

The King Flock presented a convincing snowy aesthetic. While its branches posed slight challenges for ornament placement, it nonetheless captivated judges with its thick, snow-laden branches.

Embodied as a classic icon, the Cypress Spruce from King of Christmas was likened to its richly colored and well-structured appearance, perfect for creating a cozy ambiance with its balanced fullness.
