Why Autumn in Brevard, North Carolina, Is a Tradition for Me

Every year since 2019, I've made it a habit to enjoy the fall splendor in Brevard, a quaint hilltown in North Carolina.

Initially, I was captivated by the small town's cozy shops and mouth-watering eateries, but it was the breathtaking nearby waterfalls and vibrant autumnal leaves that truly pulled me back.

A Stroll Down Brevard’s Charming Main Street

Downtown Brevard has an inviting collection of eclectic boutiques, artisan galleries, and varied dining spots. When exploring this area, I can't resist visiting the renowned O.P. Taylor's toy shop, where every nook is filled with delights for both young and old, ranging from intricate puzzles to charming dolls.

Another gem is D.D. Bullwinkel's Outdoors, offering a wide array of adventure supplies from rugged footwear to durable jackets. In the spirit of fall, the town hosts the Pumpkin Fest in Silvermont Park every weekend in October, featuring a vibrant pumpkin display, tasty treats from food trucks, and engaging activities for all.

A Culinary Haven with Local Flavors

Gastronomy in Brevard is diverse and flavorful. Pescado's and Sunrise serve an array of meals, including hearty breakfast dishes, zesty tacos, and juicy burgers. My personal favorite is their veggie bowl, perfectly complemented by crispy chips and spicy salsa.

For a fusion twist, Gordingos presents innovative taco creations within the relaxed setting of Ecusta Brewing. A must-try here are the Nachos Gordos that promise to deliver a delightful mix of textures and tastes.

Nature’s Wonders and Scenic Views Around Every Corner

Traveling with family who have mobility challenges doesn't limit our scenic adventures. We often explore Looking Glass Falls in Pisgah National Forest, a stunning 60-foot cascade that's a short drive from Brevard's center.

During fall, the waterfall is enveloped in a striking backdrop of colored leaves. I typically park along US 276 South, allowing my family to take in the panoramic views from an observation deck while I venture closer to the falls.

Another highlight is a drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway where endless views of changing foliage make for a picturesque journey. Early hours are best to avoid crowds and maximize tranquility.

The Joy of Camping Surrounded by Nature

Autumn camping in Brevard is unparalleled. With sunny days and crisp nights, it's ideal for enjoying fireside chats before cozying up in a warm sleeping bag. Davidson River offers a peaceful campsite near the water. Falling asleep to the sound of the river adds a serene touch to the camping experience.

This campground serves as a perfect launch pad for exploring local hiking paths. My go-to choice for adventure is the trail leading to Twin Falls, promising an invigorating hike through the picturesque Pisgah National Forest.

Trails that Promise Awe-Inspiring Views

Brevard is nestled in Transylvania County, North Carolina, which boasts more than 1,000 miles of trails. One standout hike is to Moore Cove Falls, offering the unique chance to walk behind the cascade itself, making for an easy yet memorable 1.5-mile trek.

For those ready to explore beyond, trails like Black Balsam Knob, Sam Knob, and the Fryingpan Mountain Lookout Tower promise breathtaking vistas, all within a short drive from Brevard's heart.

Another magical autumn sight is the Shadow of the Bear, a phenomenal silhouette seen around Whiteside Mountain. Occurring from mid-October to early November, this spectacle is a must-see—and a rewarding drive from Brevard.
