Resilient Dog from Hurricane Florence Named People's Cutest Rescue
Bastian, a 7-year-old canine who was saved from the deluge of Hurricane Florence, has achieved the title of World's Cutest Rescue Dog as awarded by People magazine.
The announcement took place on Wednesday during the "CBS Mornings" program, highlighting Bastian as the winner among three contestants, which included Apollo and Tiki. Found alongside his sister in the flood-stricken areas of South Carolina during the 2018 hurricane, Bastian was eventually transported to New Jersey. There, he was the last pup left unadopted at an event, until Joelle Andres chose to bring him home. His sibling found a new family as well.
A Journey of Trust and Communication
"This experience has been incredibly unbelievable," Andres shared about the competition on "CBS Mornings." Initially described as highly reserved, Bastian required time to adjust and bond beyond the typical instant connection many people desire with pets.
Joelle Andres introduced communication buttons programmed with words like "walk," "outside," "treat," "water," "hello," and "home." This approach was intended to empower Bastian in voicing needs and preferences, thus enriching his interactions and care.
Recognition and Charity
With his newfound fame, Bastian will grace the pages of People magazine. In his honor, a donation of $1,000 will be made to the Burlington County Animal Alliance of New Jersey, the organization pivotal in his rescue.
This tale of survival and connection exemplifies the deep impacts of rescue efforts and the rewarding process of earning trust and companionship from an animal in need.
