Historic Dive into the Seine: Parisians Swim After 100-Year Prohibition Lifted
The Seine River echoed with exclamations of 'It's warm!' as locals of Paris embraced this unique opportunity to swim in their beloved waterway for the first time in over a century.
Since 1923, the Seine has largely been off-limits for swimmers due to heavy pollution and potential hazards from boat traffic. However, a massive overhaul costing over $1.5 billion has now cleared the river to meet European guidelines on water cleanliness most of the time.
With environmental agencies monitoring closely, and the water showing pollutant levels well within safe limits, public swimming is now permitted in designated sections of the Seine including locations near the renowned Eiffel Tower and the Île Saint-Louis.
The excitement along the banks was palpable. Ahead of sunrise, city workers cleared the last remnants of river flora, while a crowd formed, ready to dive into the restored waters.
Each swimmer was equipped with a bright yellow flotation device, following strict safety protocols overseen by multiple lifeguards on duty. The gentle current served as a reminder that the Seine remains a vibrant urban river.
Amine Hocini, a 25-year-old local, expressed his delight at swimming in the heart of Paris during a hot spell, noting with surprise that the river was warmer than he had anticipated.
For safety reasons, swimming remains confined to specific zones. Spectators, whether tourists or locals on morning runs, gathered to admire the scene, some cheering as swimmers exited the water joyfully.
François Fournier, observing from a bridge, voiced his skepticism, citing the years of river pollution he recalled. Meanwhile, only minor debris could be seen, the air carrying merely a subtle, earthy aroma.
Lucile Woodward, aged 43, found a certain elegance in swimming near Île Saint-Louis. While she had initial reservations, she is reassured by the rigorous testing ensuring the safety of the swimming area.
The vision to allow swimming again began in 1988 with Jacques Chirac, then mayor, laying the foundation for this historic moment.
President Emmanuel Macron highlighted the collective effort that led to this achievement, marking a moment of national pride for France.
With soaring temperatures this summer, welcoming Parisians into the Seine offers a refreshing reprieve, with designated swimming zones open through the end of August.
