Evacuations Amid Crete Wildfires
Thousands of people, including many tourists, were forced to flee as wildfires ravaged the Greek island of Crete, fanned by intense winds.
Firefighters faced immense challenges trying to control the flames near Ierapetra, a coastal region on the island, where the fire initially broke out on Wednesday.
The evacuation involved moving residents and vacationers from hotels and homes overnight, highlighting the severity of the situation.
Approximately 5,000 individuals, primarily foreign tourists, sought refuge in local sports facilities after evacuating Ierapetra, according to hotel association official Giorgos Tzarakis.
Several villages including Ferma, Katharades, Koutsounari, and Kakia Skala had to be vacated, while the fire service battled three major fires in Achlia, Ferma, and Skinokapsala.
Fire footage captured massive smoke clouds towering over Crete's beaches, while local hospitals prepared for potential emergencies.
The fire brigade, comprising 230 firefighters and 10 aircraft, combated the wildfire, hindered by fierce winds reaching up to 50 mph.
Some evacuees were transported by sea as precautionary steps were taken, with boats ready for any urgent need.
Local authorities reported minor injuries due to smoke inhalation but confirmed no significant harm occurred.
Warnings were sent via mobile alerts to urge evacuations, advising residents not to jeopardize their safety for personal belongings.
The blaze posed a persistent threat to inhabited areas, illuminating night skies while emergency services worked tirelessly.
Crete is beloved by tourists domestically and internationally, making the situation critical during its dry, fire-prone summer.
With fire risks high, similar wildfires across Greece have already demanded significant firefighting efforts this summer.
