Jurassic World Rebirth: A Film Still in Development

The newest addition to the Jurassic Park series attempts to weave two underwhelming films into one narrative.

Jurassic World Rebirth aims to revive the franchise with fresh faces and a storyline that harks back to the thrilling essence of the original. Dinosaurs on a rampage, a lush tropical backdrop, and top-notch visual effects are all elements expected to dazzle audiences. However, despite its efforts to captivate viewers, the movie lacks the excitement anticipated for a cinematic release, making it more suitable for streaming platforms.

The plot unfolds a few years post-dinosaur disaster as reckless adventurers venture to Ile Saint-Hubert, a secluded island where bioengineered dinosaurs thrive beyond human control. This secluded habitat remains one of the few areas where these creatures can survive due to drastic climate shifts.

Despite widespread awareness of the island's perils, influenced by dinosaurs' predatory instincts, the lure of profit-rich pharmaceuticals derived from their DNA is irresistible. This financial temptation persuades Martin Krebs, a pharmaceutical magnate, to recruit paleontologist Henry Loomis and tactical specialists Zora Bennett and Duncan Kincaid for a covert operation that inevitably derails.

Meanwhile, the motives behind Reuben Delgado’s voyage near the island with his daughters and one daughter's boyfriend remain unclear. Their boat's ill-fated encounter with aquatic dinosaurs highlights their precarious decisions as they barely reach the shore, unaware of the imminent avoidable dangers.

The narrative brings these groups together swiftly but fails to unify their stories convincingly. Bennett's team and Delgado's family feel like remnants from separate movies, presumably in an attempt to gently reboot the series. This wouldn't be detrimental if the film could mirror the dynamic energy of its predecessors and present the dinosaurs with fresh creativity. Yet, except for a tense mountain sequence with winged reptiles, the plot remains disappointingly conservative.

This conservatism highlights how predictable the film's plot is. Bennett and Loomis must gather samples from various dinosaurs located across the island, gradually realizing the danger of their mission as they encounter more life-threatening scenarios.

Previously, Universal hinted at repositioning dinosaurs atop the ecological ladder, sparking hopes for a novel direction within the franchise, promising diverse big-screen spectacles. However, Jurassic World Rebirth regresses to familiar territory, signaling a future for the series that’s more tedious than exhilarating.

Featuring actors like Ed Skrein, Philippine Velge, and Bechir Sylvain, the movie is currently playing in theaters.
