Kraft Heinz Commits to Phasing Out Artificial Dyes in U.S.

In a significant move, Kraft Heinz has announced its intention to eliminate artificial colorants from its U.S. products by 2027. The company has also pledged to cease the development of any new products that incorporate these artificial dyes starting immediately.

Kraft Heinz, well-known for brands like Jell-O, Capri Sun, and Kool-Aid, disclosed online that around 10% of its product lineup currently includes artificial colors. The company has already started investing in the transition to natural coloring solutions or the removal of dyes altogether.

Transitioning to Natural Colors

Back in 2016, Kraft Heinz made headlines by reformulating its Kraft Macaroni and Cheese to exclude artificial dyes. Meanwhile, some products, such as Heinz Tomato Ketchup, have consistently remained free of such additives. This initiative aligns with ongoing efforts led by U.S. health officials to cut down on synthetic dyes in food supplies.

Pedro Navio, who leads Kraft Heinz’s North American operations, emphasized their commitment to further reducing the use of FD&C (Food, Drug & Cosmetic) colors, noting that most of their products do not use them at all or use natural alternatives.

Regulatory Focus on Synthetic Colors

Significant pressure from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the FDA has been mounting on the food industry to curb or replace synthetic dyes with safer alternatives. While complete prohibition has not been mandated, steps are being taken to lessen reliance on petroleum-derived additives.

Although eight artificial colors are still sanctioned by the FDA, some states, including California and West Virginia, have initiated their prohibitions. The FDA aims to facilitate the transition away from synthetic dyes by the end of 2026, largely relying on voluntary industry cooperation.
