Trump Challenges Water and Energy Efficiency Regulations

In an effort to dismantle existing efficiency standards, President Trump has directed the Department of Energy to explore the removal or weakening of regulations that govern the water and energy use of household appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines.

This directive marks the end of a week characterized by Trump's attempts to reverse policies that conserve water and reduce energy expenses by encouraging the production of more efficient products. Previously, reports from CNN and E&E News indicated that the Energy Star program was also at risk under the Trump administration's planned changes at the Environmental Protection Agency.

Energy Star plays a critical role in certifying energy-efficient products, making it easier for consumers to identify appliances that operate efficiently using its well-known blue label. The standards that President Trump targets serve as consumer protections to guarantee that products on the market meet practicality-driven efficiency benchmarks.

"The legislative body established these standards, and the president cannot simply nullify them at will," said experts who caution against the dismantling of established protections.

Potential Changes in Energy Legislation

A briefing from the White House recommends collaboration between the Secretary of Energy and the Office of Legislative Affairs to evaluate existing water pressure and corresponding energy efficiency mandates, with an eye toward revising or annulling outdated or unnecessary regulations.

Furthermore, the memo advocates for a suspension in enforcing these standards until revisions are either confirmed or enacted. The federal government is urged not to enforce policies that negatively impact the everyday lives of taxpayers, as per the presidential memorandum.

"Consumers will ultimately face higher costs if these efficiency standards are eliminated," argues Andrew deLaski, the executive director of the Appliance Standards Awareness Project, underscoring that presidential authority alone does not extend to repealing laws that Congress passed into legislation.

Legislative Actions

In conjunction with the Department of Energy memo, President Trump took legislative action by signing off on four Congressional Review Act resolutions to reverse efficiency standards set in the Biden era. These standards pertained to appliances such as water heaters and refrigerators. Earlier, the president also signed an executive order aiming to revisit definitions from the Obama administration that had enhanced the efficiency of showerheads.
