Our Journey from California to Texas: A New Chapter in Our Lives

Originating from San Bernardino, California, my wife Tomi and I first crossed paths at a social event in 2019 and tied the knot in April last year.

Over the years, San Bernardino's charm faded, with rising concerns like homelessness and gang-related issues.

Despite the challenges, California had its perks. Family was a short drive away, and the accessibility to mountains and coastlines was unrivaled.

The Fire That Forced Our Hand

In Highland, California, near my grandparent's residence, the Line Fire erupted.

Initially, our rental home seemed safe until embers ignited a neighbor's property. That changed everything.

Awakened by a sudden noise, my husband and I scrambled to safety as flames approached fast.

Grabbing our young sons, Anthony and Charlie, we dashed out of the house with no time to dress.

Our home was engulfed, causing extensive fire and smoke damage, leaving us in shock as we watched from outside.

Starting Over and Finding a New Home

With no option to remain in California due to high living costs, we decided Texas was our best fresh start.

My brother, a resident of San Antonio for a decade, had always spoken fondly of the city.

We liquidated our remaining savings and relocated to Texas, hopeful about the opportunities.

Embracing Texas: A More Affordable Life

Upon settling, the cost differential was apparent: our rent dropped significantly compared to California.

Applications for housing took time, but eventually, we secured an apartment promptly, waiting in a hotel briefly.

Day-to-day expenses like gas and vehicle registration proved more economical than expected—groceries, less so.

Though our earnings decreased, the cost savings overall button much of the financial strain.

Our Texas Experience: Surpassing Expectations

Texas surprised us with its lush landscapes, contradicting our preconceived notions and fostering a community-friendly vibe.

The climate and environment have been soothing, particularly for my wife, who finds comfort in the less volatile weather.

Overcoming Hurdles and Adapting to Change

Adapting to culinary differences has been challenging, especially missing California's unique flavors.

Our connection to Texas has only deepened, reinforced by the warmth and kindness of its people.

Though uncertain at first, our decision to move has proven fruitful, with aspirations to settle long-term.

The relief of not living with the constant anxiety of wildfires is a significant advantage of our new life here.
